1. DARK – тёмный; но если про театр, то “закрытый, не дающий представлений”:
• London theaters are customarily dark on Sunday, so that performers and staff can have a day off.

2. BED – кровать; или же “клумба, грядка”:
• Boxwood hedges and beds of roses are flanked by rows of Oriental plane trees.
В общем, BED OF ROSES – не только ложе с розовыми лепестками, но и клумба с розами, если захотеть.
Также BED – любая подложка:
• A giant squid was spotted cruising just above the seabed. (= у морского дна)
• The squid yum was served on a bed of lettuce and seasoned with chili. (= на листьях латука)

3. STRENGTH – не только “сила”, но и “количество; большое количество”; + STRONG – в количестве:
• The site was the size of 75 football pitches reflecting a Viking army several thousand strong.
• The pride grew to be several hundred strong.

4. Глаголы SPORT и ROCK – щеголять чем-либо; выставлять напоказ; выделяться характерной деталью:
• Knowing he had come from a poor family in West Virginia, why was he seen sporting expensive new shoes and clothes, having a large flat screen T.V. in his dorm room, and being seen with prime seats at Lakers games?
• In both the books and movies, Hagrid's rocking a beard and a moleskin overcoat.

5. FACULTY – ещё и “способность, дар”, а не только “факультет” и “профессорско-преподавательский состав”:
• Even at the age of 100, the Queen still has all her faculties.
• I had the Irish faculty of seeing some gleam of humor in every darkness.

6. ABROAD – не обязательно “за границей”; возможно, что “повсюду” вообще:
• There's a rumor abroad that the virus is somehow related to 5G mobile phone networks.

7. И, наконец, QUARTER – кроме “четверти” и “квартала”, ещё и “некое лицо или группа людей”:
• This book could not have been written without financial help from many quarters.
